small paintings, big impact.
I’ve been living in rented spaces for my entire adult life. And I know that’s the reality for most.
White walls, temporary locations, and a lack of personality.
They seemed cool at first - unbothering, inoffensive, and most importantly for me, uncluttered. They don’t force you to like a specific pattern of wallpaper that may have been placed onto the walls a decade ago, often making you question the design decisions of the previous occupants. White, blank walls allow your mind to empty itself, to not have to focus in periods of rest, or be distracted.
For a long time I found beauty in the vast emptiness of all the white walls I have grown accustomed to. But I guess it’s human nature to eventually get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
What I once considered to be refreshingly minimalist turned into lack of inspiration. I felt a profound need to make these walls feel more like me, to make them feel less like a desert and more like an oasis.
Being an artist, I also love collecting other people’s work. Not only out of solidarity and support, but also to continuously challenge my point of view and perception of art. And after adding just a few framed artworks to a few areas of my space - above my work desk and in the hall - my focus finally relaxed.
I was surprised to see how much of a difference even a few small pieces of art can make to my space and to how I feel in my home.
If you’ve been putting off starting your own gallery wall, or collecting artworks from your favourite artists, consider this your sign. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
